Anna MacDonald Obituary

Anna Marie MacDonald:

October 5, 1946 - March 9, 2019

It is with sadness that the family announces Anna’s passing at home on Saturday, March 9, 2019 following a brief but courageous battle with cancer.

Anna is survived by her loving husband, Bob MacDonald, of South Napan Rd.; her cherished daughter, Cheryl (Gary) MacDonald of Toronto; son-in-law, Rob Rowe of Toronto; three grandchildren, Alexandra Rowe of Toronto, Matthew MacDonald of London, England, and James MacDonald of Toronto; brother, Byron (Judy) O’Donnell of Pickering, ON; sisters, Betty (Ed) Hospodar of Miramichi, Irene (David) Trask of Dartmouth, NS, and Kathy (David) Smith of Moncton, NB; special cousin Berns Galloway of Victoria, BC; numerous nieces, nephews, and special friends.

Anna was predeceased by her parents, Edward and Annie (Sweezey) O’Donnell, and by a beloved daughter, Bonnie MacDonald.

Anna graduated from Harkins High School in Newcastle, and was employed in past years by N.B. Hydro, Ottawa Hydro, The One Canadian Air Group Canadian Forces Europe, and by New Brunswick Tourism.

Anna was an active member of the community.  She was a past Rotarian, a board member of the Miramichi Organization for Residential Employment Services (M.O.R.E.), a past General Manager of the Chatham Business Development Corporation (CBDC), a past Executive Director of Miramichi Regional Tourism, a past chairperson of Hospice Miramichi, a current and active member of the N.B. Liberal Party, a member of St. Andrew’s United Church and chairperson of the Worship and Faith Development Team of that church, and a member of the Miramichi Presbytery Syrian Refugee Sponsorship Committee.

Anna was personable, outgoing, and loved to socialize and entertain family and friends.  Her association with friends of the United Church and commitment to their causes brought her joy, meaning and purpose.

Visitation was held at Adams Funeral Home Ltd., 140 King St., Miramichi on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.  Funeral service was held at St. Andrew’s United Church, 188 Wellington St., Miramichi on Thursday, March 14, 2019 at 11 am with Rev. Charlene Maguire MacKnight officiating.  Music for the service was provided by Mr. William Sweezey and St. Andrew’s Choir.  The hymns were “Here I Am, Lord”, “I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry”, “Make Me a Channel of Your Peace” and the recessional hymn was “We Shall Go Out with Hope of Resurrection”.  The lighting of the Christ Candle was done by Ellen Sweezey.  Remembrances of Anna were given by her sister Kathy Smith and a poem was read by granddaughter Alexandra Rowe.  The scripture readings were read by her brother Byron O’Donnell and brother-in-law David Smith.

A large group from the Liberal Association and Sunday Brunch Group sat as a body for the service and formed a guard of honor following the service.

As expression of sympathy, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, St. Andrew’s United Church, Extra Mural Program, or a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.  Arrangements were entrusted to Adams Funeral Home Ltd., 140 King St., Miramichi, telephone 773-3492 or messages of condolence may be sent online to www.adamsfh.ca
