John H. McDonald

    1938 – 2019

John Herbert McDonald, husband of Phyllis Mossman of Millerton and formerly of Miramichi passed away at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at the age of 80.

Born in Chatham, on July 5, 1938, he was the son of the late Jack and Bernice (Price) McDonald.  John was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church, Northumberland Lodge Number 17, Miramichi Chapter Number 44 of the Eastern Star, Highland Society of NB in Miramichi and Derby Seniors.  He was the organist at St. Mark’s United Church for many years and also a choir member at St. Andrew’s United Church for many years.   For many years John worked as the caretaker for Riverside Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife: Phyllis Mossman; one daughter: Sheila and one son: Reinhardt of Norway; one step-daughter Judy Carpenter (Bruce) of N.S.; two step-sons Wayne Pitman (Brenda) and Gary Pitman (Gloria) all of N.S.; one brother: Robert McDonald (Joanne) of Miramichi; one step-daughter-in-law Kimberly Turnbull of Ottawa; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He was predeceased by his parents, wife Una Pitman, step-sons Neil Pitman and John W. Turnbull.

Visitation was held at Adams Funeral Home Ltd., 140 King St., Miramichi on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm.  A Masonic service and an Eastern Star service was held at the funeral home on Friday evening.  Funeral service was held at St. Andrew’s United Church, Miramichi on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 2 pm with Rev. Charlene Maguire MacKnight officiating.  Music for the service was provided Joanne Wiseman and St. Andrew’s Choir and the hymns were “Amazing Grace” and “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah” and the recessional hymn was “The Lord’s My Shepherd”.  Special music was provided Arthur Strang and the hymns were “In The Garden”, “Far Side of Jordan” and “Stroll Over Heaven”.  The lighting of the Christ Candle was done by Judy Carpenter.

Honorary pallbearers were Glen Garrish, Bill Donald, Blair Henry, John Gray, Ken Simpson and The Hon. Jake Stewart.  Groups that sat together for the service were Highland Society, Derby Seniors and Miramichi Chapter Number 44 of the Eastern Star.  Pallbearers were Gary Pitman, Wayne Pitman, Matthew Pitman, Ryan Pitman, Cory Shaddick and Dale MacDonald.    Interment will be held in Riverside Cemetery later in the spring.
