In Loving Memory of Argentine M. Richard
1932 - 2024
It is with great sadness that the family of Argentine Marie Richard, age 92, announces her passing on September 17, 2024, at Mount Saint Joseph Nursing Home. She was born on January 27, 1932, in Baie Ste. Anne, NB, a daughter of the late George and Obeline (Mazerolle) Mazerolle.
Argentine is survived by her children: Geralda Richard, Guy (Barbara) Richard, and Norma (Paul) Gilliss; grandchildren: Kevin (May Lanie) MacNaughton, Natasha (Mario) MacNaughton, Brian Richard, Sarah Gilliss, Jason (Megan) Richard, Ryan (Kayla) Richard and Emily (Tanner) Gilliss; great-grandchildren: Blake, Ashton, Haily, Isabelle, Mario, Haylie, Hunter, Kayden, Corbin, Carter and Brynlee; siblings: Maria (Chris) Brown, Hubert (Yvette) Mazerolle, Edna (late Armand) Demers, Edith (late Paul) Theriault, Roddy (Gail) Mazerolle; brothers-in law: Eric Blackwood and Yvon Manuel; and sisters-in-law, Mary Mazerolle and Catherine Hill; as well as many nieces and nephews and her dear friend, Lourdes Turnbull.
Argentine was predeceased by her husband, Gerald Richard; son, Eric; and infant daughter, Elizabeth; as well as brothers and sisters: Nicholas Mazerolle, George Mazerolle, Vilbon Mazerolle, Eloise (late Joseph) Comeau, Leo Mazerolle, Rina Manuel, Aline Blackwood, Enlevine Mazerolle, Stella Mazerolle; sister-in-law, Bertha (late Jean) Paulin; and brother-in-law, Pierre (late Bernadette) Desroches.
As a young woman, Argentine left her hometown of Baie Ste. Anne for Rogersville, where fate brought her to the love of her life, Gerald, whom she married in 1954. They started their family in Petit-Rocher before moving to Tilt Cove, Newfoundland, and eventually settled in Chatham, NB. Argentine and “Gerry” cherished their time with their large families and delighted in camping adventures with their children.
Argentine's love for children was boundless. After Gerry's passing in 1978, she found a new calling, opening her home to babysitting, a role she embraced into her 70s. Over the years, she cared for more than 100 children, becoming “Mémère” to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
As a devout Catholic, Argentine's love was expressed through her caring nature. Her door was always open, and no one ever left without tasting her famous bread, rolls or soup. Argentine found peace being outdoors, spending hours gardening, clam digging and berry picking with her sisters. She also found joy in Bingo and, later, in the company of the "Golden Girls" at the Mount each night.
Argentine's legacy is one of deep love, care and community. She was the best Mom, Mémère, sister and friend and we will miss her dearly.
We are deeply grateful to all the healthcare professionals and staff at Mount Saint Joseph Nursing Home. Your love and care made Argentine feel at home, and we cannot thank you enough for your dedication and compassion.
