Benjamin "Louis" Matthews Obituary

In Loving Memory of Benjamin "Louis" Matthews

March 11, 1941 – June 20, 2026

It is with sadness that the family of Benjamin "Louis" Matthews of Miramichi, New Brunswick, announce his passing on June 20, 2026, at the age of 85. He passed away peacefully at Percy’s Place, Miramichi.

Born in Fort Garry, Manitoba, on March 11, 1941, Louis was the son of the late Albert and Dora Matthews.

Louis was a hardworking man who believed in the value of an honest day’s work. He continued working until the age of 81 and spent many years driving a salt truck. He was also well known throughout the area for his small food truck business, Peyton’s Potato Factory, named after his beloved grandchild. He became especially known for serving homemade fish and chips with fresh-cut French fries, always prepared with care and pride.

Louis had a wonderful sense of humour and loved making people laugh. Family and friends will fondly remember his Christmas gift-wrapping antics, often placing presents inside multiple layers of boxes and wrapping them with duct tape just to see the smiles and hear the laughter on Christmas morning. He enjoyed simple pleasures, good company, and sharing a laugh with those around him. He also greatly appreciated home-cooked meals and especially looked forward to Lois’s cooking, with her homemade bread holding a special place among his favourite treats.

He was an adherent of St. Andrew’s United Church, Chatham, New Brunswick.

Louis is survived by his loving partner of more than 20 years, Lois McKinnon; his daughter, Donna Matthews of Orangeville, Ontario; his son, Rodney Matthews (Melissa) of Brantford, Ontario; his step-son, Matthew McKinnon (Buena) of Miramichi; his sister, Susan Mantik of Winnipeg, Manitoba; his cherished grandchildren, Peyton and Catherine; his cherished step-grandson, Austin McKinnon; as well as his niece, Barb, and nephews, Billy and Ron.

Besides his parents, Louis was predeceased by his grandson, Edward; his brothers, George and David; and his wonderful friend, Kenneth Quinn.

Louis will be remembered as a hardworking man with a great sense of humour. He loved a good laugh, enjoyed the company of others, and was never happier than when sharing stories and smiles. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

A Celebration of Life will take place at St. Andrew’s United Church, 188 Wellington Street, Miramichi, New Brunswick, on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with the Reverend Charlene Maguire MacKnight officiating.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to the St. Andrew’s United Church Choir Fund would be appreciated by the family.
