In Loving Memory of Betty Thibeault
1936 – 2026
Betty Marion Thibeault of Miramichi, New Brunswick, passed away at the Miramichi Regional Hospital, on May 28, 2026, at the age of 89.
Born in Berwick, Nova Scotia, on December 1, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Leta (Durling) Wheeler.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Julie Mazerolle (Frank Veitenheimer) of Moncton, New Brunswick; grandchildren, Mandy Mazerolle Dixon (Ellion) and Kirk Mazerolle; great-granddaughter, Ashley Taylor (Conor); sister, Mary Martin (late Emile) of Baie-Sainte-Anne; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Rene Thibeault; and brother, Robert Wheeler Jr.
Betty was a talented quilter whose skills came from a time when quilts were carefully made by hand, one stitch at a time. She created countless beautiful quilts throughout her life and also enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She took great pride in sharing these skills with her daughter, passing down not only her knowledge, but also her love of creating things by hand.
Betty was known for her kindness and generosity. She was always willing to lend a helping hand to those around her and believed strongly in giving back to her community. She regularly donated to a cemetery in Nova Scotia, helping preserve a place that was important to her and many others. When her granddaughter was young, Betty lovingly prepared care packages for people in need, often including handmade quilts created with her own hands. She found joy in helping others and never hesitated to share what she had with those who needed it most.
A proud member of the Legion, Betty cherished the connection it gave her to her late husband, a veteran. Receiving her 50 year membership pin was an honour that meant a great deal to her and reflected her lifelong loyalty and dedication.
Betty also had a deep passion for family history. She spent many hours tracing her ancestry and was fascinated by the stories of those who came before her. Discovering that her five times great grandfather was an Indigenous chief strengthened her appreciation for her heritage and inspired a lifelong interest in Indigenous culture and history. Her granddaughter often delighted her with thoughtful gifts related to this passion, which she treasured.
Betty found comfort and companionship in her beloved little dog, Bear, who was always close by. She treasured her family, her hobbies, and the simple moments that brought happiness to her life.
Betty will be remembered for her warm heart, her generosity, creativity, her stubborness, and unwavering love for her family. The quilts she made, the lives she touched, and the kindness she shared with others will continue to be felt for years to come. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
At Betty’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Interment will be held in Nova Scotia at a later date.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to Miramichi SPCA would be appreciated by the family.
