Carmel Conkie Obituary

Carmel Anne Conkie (Dawson), widow of the late William (Bill) Conkie passed away at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on November 3rd, 2020, at the age of 77.  Born in Nowlanville on March 28th, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Rita (Wallace) Dawson.

She was a Registered Nurse, who began her career in 1963 at the Hotel Dieu Hospital in Chatham, and retired from the Miramichi Regional Hospital in 1999.  Caring for others was not just a job to Carmel, it was her calling.  Long after she retired, she continued to help and support others through her friendship and volunteer activities.

Following her retirement, she remained busy tending to her flower gardens, painting and attending various card parties around the City of Miramichi and Saint Margaret’s.  Carmel volunteered at the Mount Saint Joseph Nursing Home, was a member of the Napan Community Hall Board, Retired Nurses and an adherent of Saint Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church Miramichi, where she served as a member of the Parish Council.

Carmel is survived by one daughter: Lynn Anderson (Shawn), of Napan; four sisters: Betty O’Shea (Mike) of Boom Road, Margie MacDonald (late Norman), Patsy Holland (Vince) and Merita MacMillan (Blake), all of Miramichi; and one sister-in-law, Betty Dawson (late Paul), of Miramichi; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by one brother, Paul Dawson; and one brother-in-law, Norman MacDonald.

Visitation was held at Adams Funeral Home, 140 King St., Miramichi on Friday, from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm.  A private family Mass of Christian Burial was held at Saint Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church, Loggieville on Saturday, November 7, 2020 with Father Arokia Dass Chinnappan and Father Leon Creamer as Celebrants.  Music for the service was provided by Norma Sugden and Saint Andrew’s Church Choir.  The hymns were “Morning Has Broken”, “Rest In God Alone”, “Here I Am Lord”, “Gentle Woman”, “Be Not Afraid” and “Amazing Grace”.  The scripture readings were read by Lorie Holland, Merita MacMillan and Father Leon Creamer.  The prayers of the faithful were proclaimed by Ellen Hatt and the eulogy was presented by Lynn Anderson.

Pallbearers were Andrew Hatt, Brian Lamkey, Danny O’Shea, Luke MacMillan, Matthew Holland and Tommy Dawson.  Interment was in Saint Andrew’s Catholic Cemetery.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Paul Dawson Memorial Bursary Fund, the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.

Arrangements were entrusted to Adams Funeral Home Ltd., 140 King St., Miramichi, telephone 773-3492 or messages of condolence may be sent online to www.adamsfh.ca
