In Loving Memory of David P. Walsh
1937 – 2023
We are deeply saddened to announce the death of David P. Walsh, born January 2, 1937, in Morrison’s Cove, Bushville. He was the son of the late Arthur and Ruth (Young) Walsh.
Dave was a farmer by trade and by heart just like his father and his brothers. He loved his garden and his time spent at the Chatham Farmer’s Market with his extended Market family. When Dave arrived, so did the crowd who flocked to shake hands and for his famous hugs. He proudly shipped milk to the Northumberland Co-op for 33 years, and loved to stop into the store to visit the staff who were always happy to see him come for hugs and stories.
After the cattle were sold due to illness, he went to work for family friend Frank Trevors doing clean-up for A1 Siding. He worked there for many years where anytime after 6 am the coffee pot was on in the office while he waited for his work buddies to arrive. He kept in touch with Alphonse and Armond with visits and phone calls reminiscing about their escapades. He always waited for Findley and Ann’s visits in the Fall for more shared memories.
He loved visitors and was at his happiest when the house was full, the door was always open and the teapot on for a story and a laugh; especially for his neighbours: Bruce, Lana, Robert, Alexis, Steve and Wendy who were his extended family, as well as his chats at the fence with Ralph. If the boys were going to the woods, the “Old Lad” was always with them to supervise. He loved his adopted grandchildren Robert and Alexis. He was so proud of them, never hesitating to tell everyone who would listen what wonderful children they were and brag about their accomplishments.
He loved his family: his wife Sharon of 54 years, and his daughter Shari. Never venturing far form home he always kept his family close including his cherished dog Jack and his cat Chester. He called his sister Florence every night and his cousin Ben every couple of weeks. He always wanted to make sure those he loved were ok. He always kept his many beloved nieces and nephews close to his heart having a very close relationship with them all. Sharing stories from their youth, “Uncle Dave” was never far from their hearts and minds as they were in his. They always made sure to call him for his birthday or stopped in to check on him.
He was a man of faith and devout church goer, attending St. Paul’s Anglican Church, as well as Knox United Church. He always said he was an Anglican at heart and continues to support St. Paul’s till his passing, but he loved his Knox Church family. Many laughs and stories were told at the back of Knox which was the men’s favorite gathering place. He loved the old hymns and his voice would echo in the walls of Knox, and in the hearts of his church family. His faith also led him to 43 years of sobriety. He took pride in being an AA member and was a supporter of the organization where he had attended many meetings and valued the lasting friendships he made there.
Dave is predeceased by his brothers: Billy, Byron, Charlie and Glen; his sisters: Verna Ann, Mildred (DeeDee) and Ellen; sister-in-law Roberta Walsh; his beloved nephews: Tommy, Bert and Ev; great-nephews: Matthew, Tommy and Ethan; long-time friends: Gerald Reynolds and William Hay; cherished in-laws: Elizabeth and Warren McLaughlin and John Lockerbie.
He is survived and will be sadly missed by his wife, Sharon; daughter, Shari; sister, Florence; sister-in-law, Mae Walsh; many nieces and nephews; his extended family; and his in-laws: Jim, Barb and Ethel.
