With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Dr. Robert “Bob” Benedict Stewart, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and pillar of the Miramichi community, who passed away peacefully on October 11, 2025, at Percy’s Place in Miramichi, New Brunswick, at the age of 82.
Bob’s life was a testament to unwavering commitment to his cherished family, his esteemed career, and the countless lives he touched with his warmth, generosity, and boundless love for connection.
Born in Chatham, New Brunswick, Bob was the beloved son of the late Richard and Anne (Fraser) Stewart. His life was anchored by a 56-year marriage to Rosemarie (Ferguson) Stewart, whose love and partnership illuminated his path. Together, they built a legacy of family, faith, and service that will endure for generations.
Bob’s dedication to his work was nothing short of extraordinary. A man of intellect and purpose, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Health Services Administration, a Master of Business Administration and a Doctor of Philosophy majoring in Health Services Administration, an achievement he was immensely proud of. He also obtained a Certificate in Theological Studies from St. Paul’s University and the University of Ottawa, in Ottawa, Ontario.
In May 2025, Bob retired as President and CEO of Catholic Health International, where his vision and leadership transformed lives. His distinguished career also included serving as CEO of Hotel Dieu Hospital and Mount St. Joseph Nursing Home, as well as contributing his wisdom to numerous boards. Even into his 82nd year, Bob’s passion for his work never wavered, a reflection of his lifelong commitment to improving the lives of others. His early career as a sales manager at CFAN radio was marked by the same enthusiasm and joy that defined his later endeavors, as he found fulfillment in every role he embraced.
A faithful servant of St. Michael’s Basilica, Bob’s devotion to his faith was profound. As an accomplished pianist, for decades he served as the church’s organist, filling its sacred space with music that uplifted hearts and souls. A proud member of the Knights of Columbus, he lived his values with integrity and grace. His contributions to the community were recognized with the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow Rotary Club award, a fitting tribute to a man who demonstrated such strong commitment to service and community betterment.
Bob’s love for people was evident in every interaction. Whether gathering family and friends around the piano, a fire, cooking meals that brought loved ones together, or sharing stories and jokes, Bob thrived on connection. His warmth, humor, and genuine care for others left a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Bob is survived by his devoted wife, Rosemarie; his daughter, Stacey Taylor (Jeff) of Fredericton, New Brunswick; his son, Scott Stewart (Gail Seipp) of Oakville, Ontario; and his seven adored grandchildren: Jace and Jillian Taylor, and Olivia, Kathryn, Madelyn, Robert, and Claire Stewart. He was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Anne, and his brothers, William and Fraser Stewart.
