In Loving Memory of Edmund “Eddie” R. Jones

1945 – 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Edmund Russell Jones (Eddie) of Miramichi (Weldfield), NB, on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at Miramichi Regional Hospital at the age of 77. Born on August 29, 1945, Eddie was the youngest and last remaining child of the family of seven of Raymond and Myrtle (Wiggins) Jones of Scotch Settlement, NB. His siblings Florence (Merle) Sharpe, Mavis (George) Currie, Durwood, Alvah (Madeline), Evelyn (Quincy) Grant, and Arden, all pre-deceased Eddie.

Eddie is survived by his wife Helen (Jenkins), daughter Alison Jones (Darren Dignam), grandchildren Oliver, Elliot, and Everly Hubbard and sisters-in-law, Ardith (Jones) Lawrence and Suzanne Jones, numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces.

Eddie graduated from Keswick Ridge High School, then went on to receive his BA from UNB and later his BEd from St. Thomas University.  He began his teaching career at Petiticodiac High School, later he moved on to Waasis Road and St. Lawrence Jr. Highs in Oromocto where he became involved in remedial reading with the students. Later he became full-time at Waasis Rd Jr.

In 1972 Eddie and Helen were married, and in 1974 they moved to the Miramichi (Weldfield), Eddie to teach in Newcastle (former District 8). In 1976 their daughter Alison was born and in 1980 the family went to Rock Hill, South Carolina for a year sabbatical, where Eddie obtained his Master's in Speech Therapy. He then became a speech pathologist serving students in Dist.8 as well as back to being a classroom teacher. Later he moved into district office and became the Special Education co-ordinator for the district (“Special Ed”). In 2000 he retired from education.

Eddie was a great cook, occasionally working with Marion and Tommy at the Wing for special events. Eddie learned his cooking skills from his mother Myrtle who also had cooked for years for the Fredericton market. With friends, he also enjoyed being a member of the Gourmet Club where various dishes, old and new, were tried. (Helen, not being a cook, only took photos of the food.)  Besides cooking, Eddie loved to garden, vegetables and flowers being his favorites, even though the majority of what he grew he gave away as there was usually an abundance and more than his family could ever eat. He was also an avid reader, mainly mysteries, which certainly helped him pass the time while in the hospital.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the Miramichi Regional Hospital, especially those in the Palliative Care Wing for the excellent care Eddie received during his time there. Many warm blankets found their way to Eddie.  Also a special thank you to Dr. Gerard Losier for the many years that Eddie was under his care.

In lieu of a wake and funeral, a Celebration of Eddie’s life will be held at the NAPAN HALL, South Napan Rd., on Sunday, May 14, 2023, from 2 PM to 5 PM.  All are welcome to stop in.

Memorials may be made to the Miramichi Food Bank, St. Andrew’s United Church, or a charity of one’s choice.
