Edward (Ned) Whalen Obituary

In Loving Memory of Edward Whalen

1941 – 2025

George Edward Whalen (Ned) of Miramichi, New Brunswick, passed away peacefully at Percy’s Place on December 21, 2025, at the age of 84.

Born in Chatham, New Brunswick, on July 2, 1941, Ned was the son of the late George and Caroline (Murphy) Whalen. He worked at Sobeys for many years and was a man of deep and unwavering faith. A devoted member of St. Michael’s Basilica, his church and faith community were an important and cherished part of his life.

Ned had a lifelong love of sports, particularly baseball, which he played for many years. A passionate fan, he never missed the chance to cheer on the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Bruins. He was also an avid bowler for many years, participating in both men’s and mixed leagues.

Well known for his daily walks, Ned truly enjoyed his routine and especially looked forward to meeting friends each day at Tim Hortons, where he shared stories, laughter, and meaningful conversation. He greatly valued the friendships he built over the years, particularly those with his close friends Bart Hannah, Reggie Flynn, and the late Eldon McGrath, whose companionship meant so much to him.

Ned was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Donna (Knowles) Whalen; two daughters, Sherry Lynn Zielinski (Jarrett) of Calgary, Alberta, and Christa Cripps (Ralph) of Miramichi, New Brunswick; two sons, Edward Whalen (Patti) of Fredericton, New Brunswick, and David Whalen of Miramichi, New Brunswick; nine grandchildren, Bailey, Jakob, Reese, Caden, Grey, Seth, Nikka, Chase, and Jaxton; two great-grandchildren, Sawyer and Kane; one sister, Gertrude Bernard (Harold) of Truro, Nova Scotia; one brother, Billy Whalen of Miramichi, New Brunswick; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and his sisters, Peggy, Betty, Kay, Nina, and Mary.

As per the family’s wishes, there was no visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Michael’s Basilica, 10 Howard Street, Miramichi, New Brunswick, on Friday, January 2, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with Father John Fraser as Celebrant.  Music for the service was provided by Mr. David Bonnell and St. Michael's Choir and the hymns were "Here I Am Lord", "The Lord Is My Shepherd", "Songs of The Angels" and "Be Not Afraid".  The scripture readings were read by Karen Daley and the eulogy was presented by Sherry Lynn Zielinski.  Interment will take place in St. Michael’s Cemetery later in the spring.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to Percy’s Place would be appreciated by the family.

Arrangements were entrusted to Adams Funeral Home Ltd., 140 King St., Miramichi, New Brunswick, telephone (506) 773-3492.  Memories and condolences may be shared online at www.adamsfh.ca
