Gregory Cannon Obituary

Gregory Wilfred Cannon

February 16, 1944- August 23, 2020

It is with profound sadness that the family of Greg Cannon announces his death at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on Sunday, August 23 at age 76.

Greg was born in Dalhousie, New Brunswick, the youngest of Ted and Corinne (Allain) Cannon’s five children.  He was involved in music from an early age as a drummer in his family’s band.  As an adult he and lifelong friend Peter Baldwin formed the core of a number of bands and musical groups which played throughout New Brunswick in the 60’s and 70’s.  During that period Greg pursued his education, financed by working in and managing bars, and went on to take a position as a teacher in Chatham.  Throughout this period any spare time Greg and his friends could put together were spent hiking, camping and fishing.

Greg loved travelling, so when he finished post-secondary studies at Saint Thomas University he and his first wife, Barb, took an extensive year-long tour of Europe, which included several months stay at an Israeli kibbutz.  The following years brought a variety of life and career changes, culminating in a stint with the federal Employment Development Branch and work with various government programs which saw him move to cities throughout the Maritimes.

In the late 80’s Greg felt called to return to the Miramichi and his original profession-teaching.  He helped pioneer the alternative education program ACES, designed to keep at-risk students in school and went on to finish his career in education at Gretna Green Elementary.

In the early 90’s Greg met his soul’s companion in Karen Cormier.  The two wed in 1992 and spent the next few decades exploring the outdoors and the world, travelling to China, Thailand, Costa Rica, Mexico and the Caribbean.  When they weren’t working or travelling they were growing their mutual passion for gardening, eventually developing an innovative raised bed system dubbed high rise gardening.

In his later years Greg enjoyed spending his days outdoors by the fire observing nature and watching his garden grow.

Greg is predeceased by his parents, Ted and Corinne; sisters:  Joanne Gilbert, Rochelle Andre, and Noreen Kearns.  He is survived by his wife Karen Cannon; brother Liam (Eleanor) and several nieces and nephews.

As per Greg’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Adams Funeral Home Ltd., 140 King St., Miramichi, telephone (506) 773-3492 or messages of condolence may be sent online to www.adamsfh.ca
