Hendricus G.J. (Hans) Oomes, of Ironmen Road, Miramichi, NB, passed away on December 16, 2023, at the age of 91 in Miramichi, New Brunswick.
Born in Schiedam, Netherlands, he was the son of the late Sitze Oomes and Anna Maria Holtus. He spent his younger years in Holland and, gifted and educated in the engineering sciences, he began his career recording master discs for the Philips Classics label in Baarn, Netherlands.
Hans emigrated to Ottawa, Canada in 1957, where he worked for the National Research Council and several small film companies before settling in with the National Film Board (NFB) of Canada in Montreal in 1961. It was there his eye for for visual arts and technical talents resulted in a career recording sound on over 260 documentary films spanning 32 countries. He was recognized for his work with several award nominations for exceptional sound in film documentaries over the course of his career, and capped it all serving as a Guest Professor of Sound Recording at Florida State University’s Film School in Tallahassee on behalf of the NFB in 1993.
He retired in 1995 to St. Adele, QC, before visiting Guyaquil, Ecuador in 2003, returning several times before settling back in Canada at Retirement Miramichi, New Brunswick, where he lived until his passing.
Hans was married to Terri Cormier of Miramichi at the time of his death. He is father to four children: Heather, Kristin, Jenny and Gregory, step-father to Rémy, and a grandfather to 11. He was predeceased by his only brother Jos in 2020.
Hans’ remains were cremated and returned home to The Laurentians. There will be a similar private event to commemorate his life in Miramichi at a later date.
