In Loving Memory of Joseph “Louis” Sippley

1955-2025

 

It is with heavy hearts and sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph “Louis” Sippley, of Baie-Sainte-Anne, New Brunswick, a devoted fisherman whose life was deeply intertwined with the sea.

 

On October 14, 2025, after being missing for almost two weeks, Louis was found after doing what he loved most all his life, off the coast of Prince Edward Island. Born on January 14, 1955, in Chatham, New Brunswick, the son of Samuel and Leonise Sippley, Louis lived to the age of 70, leaving behind a legacy of quiet strength, simple joys, and unwavering love for his family, the water, and the outdoors.

 

Louis was a man of the sea and the woods, a fisherman and woodsworker who spent most of his life pursuing his passions. With no fear of the water—his second home—he knew every rock, channel, island, and secret fishing spot along the shore. Retiring from the Baie- Sainte-Anne Fishery Co-op, he continued to fish leisurely, and spend time at his little dock, often with his loyal fur baby, boxer “Buddy,” by his side. A typical stubborn fisherman, down-to-earth and content with a simple life, Louis found peace in his woodpile, his flowers, his chickens, and the rhythm of the tides. He was an avid Harley Davidson enthusiast with two previous motorbikes and cherished every moment outdoors. Above all, he did everything he could for his children and adored his grandchildren, who lovingly called him “Pépère Louis.”

 

Louis will be deeply missed by his daughters, Tanya Sippley of Miramichi, New Brunswick, and Marsha Sippley of Napan Bay, New Brunswick; his sister, Albertine Martin (Alban) of Fredericton, New Brunswick; his brothers, Francis Sippley (Emerilda) of Baie-Sainte-Anne, and Zoel Sippley (Marie-Anne) of Miramichi; his cherished grandchildren: Brandon, Jeremy, and Natasha Dickson, and Haley, Jackson, and Parker Wilson; and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving is his faithful companion, “Buddy,” who was always by his side. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Philias.

 

Though his departure is tragic, Louis was found in the embrace of the waters he loved, bringing solace to his family and all who knew him. The family would like to thank family and friends for their support during the search, and a special thank you to the Canadian Coast Guard, as well as the Moncton and Miramichi Ground Search and Rescue teams, for their guidance, professionalism, and compassion.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family humbly welcomes donations to support their needs during this difficult time, and to the Miramichi SPCA in honor of Louis’s love for animals. A private celebration of Louis’s life was held at Adams Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, November 5th, 2025 with The Reverend Keith Carter officiating.  Music for the service was recorded music and the songs was "I Did It My Way" by Elvis Presley, "Amazing Grace" by Elvis Presley and "Dancing In The Sky" by Dani and Lizzy.  Memories was shared by daughter, Tanya and grandchild, Haley.

C'est avec le cœur lourd et de la tristesse que nous annonçons le décès de Joseph «Louis » Sippley, de Baie-Sainte-Anne, Nouveau-Brunswick, un pêcheur dévoué dont la vie était profondément liée à la mer.

 

Le 14 octobre 2025, après avoir été porté disparu pendant presque deux semaines, Louis a été retrouvé après avoir fait ce qu'il aimait le plus toute sa vie, au large de la côte de l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard. Né le 14 janvier 1955 à Chatham, Nouveau-Brunswick, fils de Samuel et Leonise Sippley, Louis a vécu jusqu'à l'âge de 70 ans, laissant derrière lui un legs de force tranquille, de joies simples et d'amour inébranlable pour sa famille, l'eau et la nature.

 

Louis était un homme de la mer et des bois, un pêcheur et un travailleur du bois qui a passé la majeure partie de sa vie à poursuivre ses passions. Sans peur de l'eau — sa deuxième maison —, il connaissait chaque rocher, chaque chenal, chaque île et chaque spot de pêche secret le long de la côte. À la retraite de la coopérative de pêche de Baie-Sainte-Anne, il continuait à pêcher pour le plaisir et à passer du temps à son petit quai, souvent accompagné de son fidèle compagnon à fourrure, le boxeur « Buddy ». Un pêcheur typiquement têtu, simple et terre-à-terre, content de sa vie modeste, Louis trouvait la paix dans sa pile de bois, ses fleurs, ses poules et le rythme des marées. Il était un fervent amateur de Harley Davidson avec deux motocyclettes précédentes et chérissait chaque moment passé à l'extérieur. Par-dessus tout, il faisait tout ce qu'il pouvait pour ses enfants et adorait ses petits-enfants, qui l'appelaient affectueusement « Pépère Louis ».

 

Louis laissera un grand vide dans le cœur de ses filles, Tanya Sippley de Miramichi, Nouveau-Brunswick, et Marsha Sippley de Napan Bay, Nouveau-Brunswick; de sa sœur, Albertine Martin (Alban) de Fredericton, Nouveau-Brunswick; de ses frères, Francis Sippley (Emerilda) de Baie-Sainte-Anne, et Zoel Sippley (Marie-Anne) de Miramichi; de ses petits-enfants chéris : Brandon, Jeremy et Natasha Dickson, ainsi que Haley, Jackson et Parker Wilson; et de plusieurs nièces et neveux. Lui survivent aussi son fidèle compagnon « Buddy », qui était toujours à ses côtés. Il a été précédé dans la tombe par ses parents et son frère, Philias.

 

Bien que son départ soit tragique, Louis a été retrouvé dans l'étreinte des eaux qu'il aimait tant, apportant du réconfort à sa famille et à tous ceux qui le connaissaient. La famille souhaite remercier leur famille et amis pour leur soutien pendant les recherches, et un merci tout spécial à la Garde côtière canadienne, ainsi qu'aux équipes de recherche au sol de Moncton et Miramichi, pour leur guidance, leur professionnalisme et leur compassion.

 

Plutôt que des fleurs, la famille accueille humblement les dons pour subvenir à leurs besoins durant cette période difficile, ainsi qu'à la Miramichi SPCA en l'honneur de l'amour de Louis pour les animaux. Une célébration privée de sa vie aura lieu ultérieurement.
