In Loving Memory of Katherine Anne Connell
1961 – 2023
On July 30, 2023, we lost our sister, Aunt and Great-Aunt, Kitty. She was born on July 14, 1961, the last of seven children of Frank and Lourdes Connell. It is hard to think of our world with out her, her presence and huge heart will be missed by her family and friends.
Kitty is survived by her sisters: Karen Bray, Kora Hayward (Rick), and Krista Connell (Dean Hirtle); her brother, Keith Connell (Clara); her nieces: Janine Nash (Allan), Katherine Blunden (Greg), Karla Bray (Alex), and Sarah Crouse (Ben); sisters-in-law: Mariette Connell and Yvette Connell; and nephews: Christopher Connell (Cilise), Martin Connell (Hannah), Michael Connell (Nicole), Nicholas Connell, Andrew Hayward, (Suzanne) Adam Hayward (Liz), and Gregory Hayward (Ali); and her great-nephews: Kevin Nash, Grayson Connell, Patrick Hayward, Jonathan Hayward, Jeremy Hayward, Alexander Hayward, Henry Blunden, George Blunden, Nolan Wawer, and Desmond Wawer; and great-nieces: Abagail Connell, MacKenzie Connell, Adelyn Connell and Celeste Wawer. She is also survived by her beloved Goddaughter, Mallory Legere (Jace). She was predeceased by her parents; brothers: Kirby and Kevin; and nephews: Patrick and Keith; and brother-in-law, Thomas Bray.
Kitty had a lifelong passion for nursing, holding a BScN from St FX and a Master’s degree in Nursing from Dalhousie University. She was very proud of that X ring! She held various nursing positions in Fredericton and Edmonton returning to Nova Scotia in 1989, and taking a position at the Victoria General Hospital. She moved into management roles and more senior leadership roles. At the time of her death, she was the Halifax Infirmary Site Lead and C3 Director for the Central Zone. Kitty lent her expertise to many areas including Multi-Organ Transplant, the Covid Pandemic, Orthopedics, Medicine, and Tissue Bank among others. In 2023, she was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal for her contributions during the Pandemic and in 2021, the Leadership Excellence Award – Employee Leader Nova Scotia Health’s Making Waves awards program.
Her love of nursing was second only to that of her family. When asked what they wanted to say about their Great-Aunt, her great-nephews said she was lots of fun, special and took them to great places. Kitty’s nieces and nephews are devastated by her loss which speaks to the special relationship she had with each one. Nothing was more important to her than her family and we all feel her loss keenly.
