In Loving Memory of Laurence (Buddy) Benjamin

1932 – 2023

The family of Laurence (Buddy) Benjamin would like to announce his sudden passing on Sunday, July 2, 2023 at the Miramichi Regional Hospital at the age of 90.

Beloved husband of 68 years to Audrey (Halliday) Benjamin,  much loved father of Dawn (Dan) Gunnlaugson and Rhonda Benjamin (Bruce Atkinson).  Grandpa  to Benjamin (Tanisha) Gunnlaugson, Dane Gunnlaugson, Riley Walton and Calvin Atkinson.  Great Grandpa to Watson, Wesley and little Willa Gunnlaugson. Buddy was the last member of his immediate family of 8, he had 6 Sisters – Ola, Reta, Jean, Etta, Eileen and June, 1 older brother, Ronald.

Born in Amherst, NS, December 7th, 1932, he was the son of Edward and Florence(Reynolds) Benjamin.

He married his childhood sweetheart Audrey and they began their life in Miramichi.   He worked for the Department of National Defence at CFB Chatham until his retirement.  He was a Draftsman by profession and enjoyed everything about his work – lots of great stories about the days at “The Base”, so many excellent friendships and he treasured every single one.

Buddy was one of the special Dad’s on Princess Street Extension in Chatham.  He was a founding member of the Miramichi Planning Commission, served on the Board for the Miramichi Seniors Citizen’s Home for many years and always active in his Church.  He and Audrey built a home on the River in 1978, there they held many Bible Studies, Youth Group meetings, Men’s and Ladies Prayer times, family and friend fun times.  Buddy and Audrey’s home is an oasis on the Mighty Miramichi River, looking after it was a passion that he never tired of.

At Buddy’s request there will be no visitation.  A funeral service occurred at the Point Church, 583 King George Highway, Miramichi, on Friday July 7th at 3 p.m. with Pastor Kevin Matthews officiating.  Music for the service was provided by Barb Somers and Cathy Parks and the hymns were "The Old rugged Cross", "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace".  Scripture reading and memories was by Audrey Benjamin and the eulogy was presented by Rhonda Benjamin and Dave Young.  Honorary pallbearers were Eric Cameron, Dale McNeill, Bruce Rendell, Bob Williams and Sam Williamson.  Interment will be at a later date.

If desired a donation to a Missionary or The Point Church would be appreciated by the family.
