Paul Sweezey Obituary

Paul R. Sweezey

1945 – 2022

With heavy hearts the family of Paul Richard Sweezey of Miramichi, NB, announce his passing on April 9, 2022, at the age of 76.

Born in Chatham, on June 13, 1945, he was the son of the late George and Bessie (Orr) Sweezey.

Paul was a school teacher for 35 years teaching first in Chatham, NB, followed by a year in Oxford, England, and finally going to Petitcodiac Regional School.  In 2001 Paul was the recipient of the prestigious Prime Ministers Award for Excellence in Teaching, an award that was well deserved for the tremendous dedication he gave to his students over the years.  Paul taught literature, writing and theatre arts, but drama was his true passion.

Paul was actively involved in St. Andrew’s United Church and was loved and respected by all who knew him.  Paul was highly knowledgeable about plants and gardening creating an array of flowers and vegetables during the summer months.

Paul is survived by three brothers: Art Sweezey (Barbara) of Moncton, Doug Sweezey (Susan) of Miramichi, and David Sweezey (Rebecca) of Quispamsis; and seven nephews: Erik, Kent, Jonathan, Mark, Matthew, Philip and Kevin Sweezey.  Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one nephew Christopher.

A visitation was held at St. Andrew's United Church, 188 Wellington St., from 12:30 - 1:45 pm on Saturday, April 23, 2022.  A funeral service immediately followed the same day at 2 PM with The Rev. Charlene Maguire MacKnight as Officiant.  Music for the service was provided by Organist Lois McKinnon.  The hymns were:  "It Is Well With My Soul", "In the Bulb There Is a Flower", and "Go Now in Peace".  A special musical selection "Go Rest High On that Mountain" and "Amazing Grace" was sung and played on guitar by Mark Sweezey. Lighting of the Memory Candle was by Doug Sweezey.  A special poem was read by Matthew Sweezey.  Scripture readings were read by Jonathan Sweezey and Erik Sweezey.  Pallbearers were:  Erik Sweezey, Jonathan Sweezey, Mark Sweezey, Matthew Sweezey, and Travis Steeves.  Honorary Pallbearers/Honor Guard included:  Helen Jones, Helen Steeves, Brian Savoy, Joan MacKnight Savoy, Dan Johnston, and Roger Comeau.  A guard of honor was formed by all pallbearers and the Spring and Winter Community Kitchen Volunteers.  Interment will be held in the Pine Grove Cemetery later in the spring.

For those who would like to make a donation of sympathy to Paul's memory may we suggest St. Andrew’s United Church Community Kitchen, Pine Grove Cemetery or a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.

Arrangements are entrusted to Adams Funeral Home Ltd., 140 King St., Miramichi, telephone (506) 773-3492, or messages of condolence may be sent online to www.adamsfh.ca
