In Loving Memory of Russell (Russ) William Cooper
September 7, 1959 – June 30, 2023
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Russ Cooper announce his passing on June 30, 2023.
Russ was born in East York, Ontario, but spent part of his early childhood in Laval, Quebec, until 1967 when he returned to Scarborough, Ontario. In his early 20’s Russ opened a computer store as sales manager where his love for computers thrived. He worked at Atlantis Software as Tech Support, then largely self-taught, started doing his own custom programming. In 1985 Russ moved to Liberia, West Africa for 6 years where he opened a company called Xanadu Software, and created and installed computer programs into five different banking institutions. He wrote the Liberian government Central Bank software, and became VP of Operations for Eurobank. 8 months into the Liberian Civil war, Russ returned home to Canada where he did computer consulting. In 1997, Russ created an internet forum devoted to Microsoft Windows NT Security called NTBugTraq, which became one of the most reliable and sought-after mailing lists for IT managers and vendors achieving over 31,000 subscribers, selling it to TruSecure Corporation in 2000 where Russ stayed on for a period as “Surgeon General of TruSecure Corporation”.
Outside of computers, Russ was a passionate dog-lover who considered his pups to be members of his family, sharing his life with: Data, Phantom, Millennium (Millie), Bandit, Emma, Caesar, Cleopatra (Cleo), and most recently Emma and little Cleo. Russ also loved sustainable farming and fishing and could often be found on Sturgeon Lake in Ontario, where he forged many happy memories. In late 2019 Russ retired to Napan, New Brunswick.
Russ is survived by his sister, Kelly (Alvin); nephew, Mike; nieces, Lisa (Jamie), and Taylor (Daniel); as well as his great nephew, Owen; and great niece, Leah. He is predeceased by his mother Ada Jean (Jeanne) Stewart; father George Cooper; stepfather, John Stewart; and brother, Robert (Bob) Cooper.
At the request of the family, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Interment will occur at a later date.
