In Loving Memory of Steven Paul Cunningham

January 9, 1964 – June 16, 2026

It is with profound sadness that the family of Steven Paul Cunningham of Baie-Sainte-Anne, New Brunswick, announce his sudden passing on June 16, 2026, at the age of 62.

Born in Baie-Sainte-Anne on January 9, 1964, Steven is the son of Rose-May Doucet, and the late Paul Cunningham.

For Steven, the sea was not merely a livelihood, it was his life. He began fishing at the age of fifteen and remained devoted to the fishery throughout his entire career. The waters off Baie-Sainte-Anne and the wharf at Escuminac were as familiar to him as his own home. Through calm mornings and stormy seas, long days and even longer nights, Steven worked tirelessly to provide for those he loved. He was a fisherman through and through, respected by his fellow fishermen and known by everyone who spent time along the wharf.

Even when health challenges arose, Steven could seldom be kept away from the waterfront. The wharf remained his gathering place, where stories were shared, friendships were strengthened, and life unfolded one tide at a time. His presence there will be deeply missed, and his memory will live on among the fishermen who knew him best.

Steven was a man of simple but enduring joys. He cherished family gatherings, especially when they included his mother's home-cooked meals. He loved deeply, worked relentlessly, and gave generously to those he cared about. Though stubborn at times and known for his strong will, he possessed a kind heart and unwavering devotion to his family. To many who knew him, Steven could do no wrong. He was admired not because he was perfect, but because he was genuine, hardworking, and loyal.

Above all else, Steven was a proud father and grandfather. His family was the anchor that held him steady throughout his life.

He is survived by his loving mother, Rose-May Doucet (Alphonse) of Baie-Sainte-Anne; his daughters, Chantal Jamias of Calgary, Alberta, and Cindy Meuse of Baie-Sainte-Anne; his brother, Michael Cunningham of Calgary, Alberta; and his cherished grandchildren, Isabella, Shane, and Ben, Vada, Violet, and Harlan, who brought him immense pride and happiness.

Steven also leaves behind his beloved dogs, Bear and Blaze, who were much more than pets, they were his faithful companions and his babies.

He will be sadly missed by many special aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, neighbours, and the countless fishermen whose lives crossed paths with his over the years.

Besides his father, Paul Cunningham, Steven was predeceased by his beloved son, Jason Meuse (January 2026); his sister, Denise Cunningham; his niece, Crystal; and by both his maternal and paternal grandparents.

To accommodate the schedules of the fishing community that Steven loved so dearly, visitation was held at the Sister Blondine Martin Slumber Room, 5351 Route 117, Baie-Sainte-Anne, New Brunswick, on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated the same day at Saint Anne's Catholic Church, Baie-Sainte-Anne, New Brunswick, at 6:00 p.m., with the Reverend Father John Fraser as celebrant.  Music ministry for the service was provided by the Saint Anne's Catholic Church Choir.  The eulogy was presented by Lynn Gregan.  The scripture readings were read by Adeline Martin.  The Prayers of the Faithful were proclaimed by Heather Cunningham.  The Urn Bearer was Chantal Jamias. The Honorary Pallbearers were Normand Colette, Teddy Williston, Rosaire Manuel, Randy Daigle, Roger Guimond, Marc-Andree Mazerolle, Peter Gregan, Gerard Thebeault, and Brent Poirier.  

As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick would be appreciated by the family.

As the tides continue to rise and fall along the shores of Baie-Sainte-Anne and Escuminac, Steven's memory will remain woven into the fabric of the fishing community he loved so dearly. May fair winds and calm seas carry him home, and may those who knew him find comfort in the countless memories left in his wake.
