   1921 – 2022

Sylvia Christina Durham of Miramichi, passed away at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on June 13, 2022, at the age of 100.

Born in Finland, on September 2, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Johan and Lisa (Rantonen) Valkanen.  She was a retired employee of Westinghouse Ltd., in Toronto and attended St. Andrew’s United Church.  Sylvia will be fondly remembered for her lifelong love of animals, sharp wit, sense of humour and her laugh.

The family wishes to thank Lois Foran and the staff of The Howe Residence, Miramichi for the care and companionship they provided Sylvia in her final years.

Sylvia is survived by her two step-daughters: Elsie Marie Girouard (Ludger) of Miramichi and Elizabeth Anne Ward (Charles) of Ontario; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.  She was predeceased by her parents; first husband, Perley E. Ashton; second husband, Benjamin Durham;companion, Jack Waltham; and two brothers: Sulo and Henry Valkanen.

There will be no visitation by request.  A private funeral service was held at Adams Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charlene Maguire MacKnight officiating. The music for the service was recorded music and the eulogy was presented by David Girouard.  Interment was in the Wesley United Church Cemetery, Trout Brook, NB.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Miramichi SPCA would be appreciated by the family.
