Thomas Lewis (Tim) Hoban of Miramichi, New Brunswick, passed away peacefully at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on February 5, 2026, at the age of 84.


Born in Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, on January 26, 1942, Tim was the son of the late Thomas Lewis and Jennie (Thompson) Hoban.


Tim married the love of his life, Betty Joy (Wiseman) Hoban. Together they raised three sons: Thomas L. Jr., William, and John (deceased). He is survived by his sons Thomas and William, his brother Clifford, and his sister Joan. In addition to his parents and his son John, Tim was predeceased by his beloved wife Betty and his sisters Mary and Shirley.


Tim graduated from Sydney Academy in 1960 and joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1961. He proudly served for 24 years before retiring. Following his RCMP career, he became an instructor at NBCC Miramichi from 1985 to 1989 and later served as Department Head of Protective Services from 1989 until his retirement in 2004.


Throughout his life, Tim demonstrated extraordinary dedication to his community at the local, provincial, and national levels. His service earned him numerous honours, including the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal, the Veteran’s Ombudsman Commendation, the National Association of Federal Retirees Volunteer Award (2001), and commendations from the RCMP Veterans’ Association at both provincial and national levels. He also received recognition from the Minister of Justice of New Brunswick for his volunteer work with youth and was named Coach of the Year for his work with Indigenous youth baseball in Elsipogtog First Nation.


From a young age, Tim embraced leadership and service. As a boy in Sydney, he served as President of the Altar Boys Association, was a member of the 13th Sydney Boy Scout Troop, earned his Queen Scout designation, and participated in notable scouting achievements, including hikes on St. Anne Mountain and service at a Gilwell Scoutmaster training camp.


His commitment to youth and community development spanned decades and provinces. Tim organized and led numerous clubs, sports teams, and community initiatives in Newfoundland and Labrador and New Brunswick. He helped build outdoor rinks and baseball fields, organized minor hockey leagues, coached baseball, hockey, softball, and broomball, and played senior hockey and softball. He was instrumental in establishing and supporting Boys and Girls Clubs in several communities, including Wabana, Gander, and Bouctouche, and served as president or director for many minor hockey associations.


Tim also served in leadership roles within the Lions Club at local and district levels, including District Governor for District 41N1 and Council Chair for District 41, representing Maine, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador. He was active in tourism development as President of both the Southwest Tourism Association and the Miramichi Tourism Association, proudly promoting the region across the eastern seaboard.


His dedication extended to public service and advocacy. Tim served as President of the RCMP Veterans’ Association (NB Division), National President of the RCMP Veterans’ Association, and National Director for Veterans Disability Allowance. He was also involved with Community Futures, the Douglastown Committee on Criminality, the Miramichi Stop Bullying Committee, and numerous other community initiatives.


Tim’s life was defined by service, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to youth, veterans, and community development. His energy, generosity, and determination left a lasting impact on countless individuals and communities.


Until We Meet Again.


At the request of the family, there was no visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Samuel’s Catholic Church, 36 St. Samuel’s Street, Miramichi, New Brunswick, on Tuesday, February, 24, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., with The Reverend Father Cornelius Ngurukwem as celebrant. A reception followed.  Music for the service was provided by Jacqueline Allain and the hymns were "Here I Am, Lord", "The Lord Is My Shepherd", "No Greater Love", "Do Not Let Your Hearts Be Troubled", "Song Of The Angels" and "Blest Are They".  A special song "Monster" was played by recorded music.  The scripture readings was read by a member of the RCMP and Legion and the Prayers of the Faithful was proclaimed by granddaughter Sarah.  The eulogy was presented by son Tim Hoban Jr.  A number of RCMP and Legion Members sat as a group for the service.  Interment will take place at St. Samuel’s Catholic Cemetery later in the spring.


As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Miramichi Regional Hospital Palliative Care Unit or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
