1947 – 2025
Douglas “Wayne” Ferguson of Miramichi, New Brunswick, and formerly of Ontario, passed away at Bridgeview Hall – Shannex on September 16, 2025, at the age of 78.
Born in Owen Sound, Ontario, on February 1, 1947, he was the son of the late Norman and Beatrice (Barber) Ferguson.
Wayne moved to Oakville, Ontario in 1954 and played sports like hockey and baseball. He played junior hockey and was drafted by the “Chicago Black Hawks” as a defenseman for a short period of time. He later became an Electrician and earned a Certificate of Qualification for Construction, Maintenance and Electronic Control. He was very proud of his profession. He worked as an electrician for over 40 years in Ontario and Alberta. He became a member of IBEW local 353 in Toronto, Ontario. He retired in 2010.
As a child Wayne worked some summers on his uncle’s dairy farm in Owen Sound. He had a true love for animals, dogs, cats and especially horses. When he lived in Edmonton, Alberta for 10 years he belonged to the “Klondike Square Dance Riders” and he owned two horses. The group would put on shows of square dancing on horseback and they even were a part of the Calgary Stampede Parade several times.
After retirement Wayne and Cheryl moved to Miramichi, New Brunswick from Ontario in 2011, and he enjoyed watching on TV, hockey, baseball, golf and harness racing. He had season tickets to the Miramichi Timberwolves and loved to go to Ironmen Field to watch the Chatham Miramichi Honda Ironmen each summer and always enjoyed a round of golf with friends.
He was an honest and loyal friend capable of making others feel comfortable while providing humor and support. He had a wicked sense of humor.
Wayne was a loving husband to Cheryl Ferguson for 38 years; a stepdad to Ted and Jim Hyde; a brother to Lois MacDonald (Seamus) of Perth, Australia and Keith Ferguson (Joanne) of Brantford, Ontario. Wayne had no children but always enjoyed his nine nieces and nephews.
At Wayne’s request there will be no visitation or funeral service. Interment will take place at Greenwood Cemetery in Owen Sound, Ontario at a later date.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
