William "Bill" MacFarlane Obituary

In Loving Memory of William “Bill” MacFarlane

1947 – 2026

William “Bill” Leslie MacFarlane of Miramichi, New Brunswick, passed away in Miramichi, on June 21, 2026, at the age of 79.

Born in Chatham, New Brunswick, on May 9, 1947, he was the son of the late John and Catherine (Gilliss) MacFarlane.  Bill worked in the Sign Department for the Department of Transportation for many years.  He was a church member and choir member of St. Mark’s United Church until 2013, and then later at St. Andrew’s United Church.

Bill cherished his wife and children, and played an important role in his younger brother Bob’s life, caring for him for over 25 years. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing hockey and baseball. As a father, he was a dedicated supporter of his two sons, encouraging them in their sports and guiding them through many aspects of their lives.

Bill and Carol Ann also welcomed Kia and Kiel Rubiales into their lives as adopted Canadian family members, and they remain a cherished part of their family today.

He loved hosting family gatherings, especially during the summer when relatives would visit. Bill was happiest when surrounded by a house full of people, sharing his kindness, humour, and playful teasing. Bill would play himself out with all the cooking for everyone, something he truly loved to do.

Bill was a member of the A.A. King’s Club Miramichi, where he held the position of treasurer/secretary. He was a devoted and a compassionate member, offering support to those seeking sobriety and to others committing to living one day at a time.

Following his brother Bob’s passing, Bill spent time visiting friends and residents at Bridgeview Seniors Home, helping with activities, especially BINGO, ensuring everyone was engaged and enjoying themselves.

Bill is survived by his loving wife, Carol Ann (O’Donnell) MacFarlane; his two sons, Stephen MacFarlane of Edmonton, Alberta, and Scott MacFarlane (Karly) of Miramichi, New Brunswick; three grandchildren: Morgan, Colton, and Spencer; brothers-in-law, Wayne (Becky) Clark, Peter (Susan) Clark and Alvin (Karen) Clark; as well as nieces and nephews: Gordon (Tammy) MacFarlane, Kim (Greg) Cosgrove, and Debbie (Ron) Chezenko, Sherry (Stuart) Naylor; along with cousins and many friends. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Margaret; brothers: Gordon, John, Fred, Donald, and Robert; and his brothers-in-law, Stephen and Mark Clark.

The family would like to thank the Miramichi City Police, Ambulance NB, and the Coroner’s office for their support during this very difficult time.

As per Bill’s request, there was no visitation.  A graveside service was held at St. Mark’s United Church Cemetery, King George Highway, Miramichi, New Brunswick, on Monday, June 29, 2026, at 4:00 p.m., with the Reverend Ross Wiseman officiating.  Music for the service was provided by Reverend Ross and Jo Anne Wiseman, and the hymns were "Here I Am Lord", "The Lighthouse", and "Be Not Afraid".  The eulogy was presented by son, Stephen MacFarlane.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to St. Andrew’s United Church or a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
