William J. “Billy” Dunn

       1942 – 2023

William Joseph “Billy” Dunn of Toronto, ON, and formerly of Redmondville, NB, passed away at the Toronto General Hospital on March 5, 2023, at the age of 80.

Born in Chatham, NB, on September 12, 1942, he was the son of the late John and Ellen “Nellie” (Power) Dunn.

Billy left home in 1959 at the age of 17.  First to work in a grocery store and then to work in the Toronto Stock Exchange where he developed a lifelong interest in the stock market.

Billy trained as a Jesuit for a few years before leaving to study for a Bachelor’s  and then a Master’s Degree in Sociology.  In 1974 Bill joined the Sociology Department at St. Thomas University in Fredericton.  He took a leave of absence in 1978 to study for a Doctorate at the University of Toronto, but then switched in 1982 to study for a Bachelor of Education Degree.  Teaching was always Bill’s first love.  He pursued a career as a high school teacher in Toronto for over 30 years.  Slowly shifting to part-time teaching and then retirement as his health declined.

Billy is survived by his sister, Betty Lynch of Redmondville; brothers: Fred Dunn (Claudette) of Napan, and Donnie Dunn (Joanne) of Miramichi; as well as many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his parents John and Ellen “Nellie” (Power) Dunn.

Visitation occurred at Adams Funeral Home, 140 King St., Miramichi on Monday, March 13, 2023 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM.  Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Margaret's Catholic Church on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at 11 AM with The Reverend Father Dan Bastarache as Celebrant.  Music for the service was provided by Soloist, Jacqueline Allain.  The hymns were: "Shelter Me O God", "The Lord Is My Shepherd", "Eye Has Not Seen", "One Love Released" and the recessional hymn was "Peace Is Flowing Like A River".  The first reading was read by Betty Dunn and the second reading was read by Joanne Dunn.  The eulogy was presented by Joanne Dunn, Andy Dunn and friend, Sylvia Hale.  The Prayers of the Faithful were proclaimed by John O'Shea.  The Honorary Pallbearers were: Lawrence Cook, Theresa Flynn, Joe Flynn, Patsy Flynn, Maura Flynn, and Gertrude Donaher.  The Active Pallbearers were: Andy Dunn, Colin Lynch, Michael Lynch-Chapman, John O'Shea, Doug Forbes, and Tim Dunn.  A reception followed the service at the St. Margaret's Church Hall  Interment was in St. Margaret’s Catholic Cemetery.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
